ACERA Online Membership Section

Membership with ACERA begins upon appointment to a full time County or member district position and is continuous until termination or change in employment which results in a change in eligible status. Membership is mandatory for eligible employees and begins when retirement contributions are deducted from your paycheck. Retirement contributions are deducted from your bi-weekly paycheck and membership is usually effective with your second pay period.

ACERA membership is continuous for as long as you are employed in a retirement eligible position. ACERA members who as a result of going to a non-retirement eligible position (i.e. changing from full time to part-time or project position) may elect to continue membership (retirement contributions continue to be taken) or defer membership.

Members who terminate membership/employment before retirement and meet the service criteria may elect to defer membership. Additionally, members who terminate employment and begin working for another public agency which has a reciprocal agreement with ACERA may link retirement benefits. See Reciprocity/Intersystem Membership for information.

The information contained in this section is not intended to be all inclusive. The statements in this guide are general in nature and are written to be as understandable as possible while remaining accurate. The retirement law is very complex, and if conflict arises, any decision will be based on the law and not on the text from this website. No statement in the ACERA Online Membership Section is considered a legally binding interpretation, enlargement, or amendment of the provisions contained in the County Employees' Retirement Law of 1937 ('37 Act) or ACERA Bylaws.
