What is COBRA?

Cobra rights for retirees discontinued dependents: COBRA mandates that employers offer the continuation of group health and dental coverage to retirees dependents due to certain qualifying events. Dependents may enroll for COBRA because coverage is discontinued due to divorce, retiree's death, and dependents whose age exceeds plans limits. COBRA costs are fully paid by the enrollee(s) at group plan premium costs plus a 2% administrative fee. This coverage, in most cases, extends medical and/or dental coverage up to thirty-six (36) months. When a COBRA situation occurs, enrollment forms may be obtained from ACERA. Payment is to be made on a monthly basis.
