  • Is the Retirement Health coverage the same as the Active coverage?

      No, there are some differences. Generally you may continue the same health care coverage that you had as an active employee, however some plans, such as Blue Cross Prudent Buyer plan is no available to retired members. ACERA does offer some plans which are specific to retirees. The ACERA sponsored health plans are from Blue Cross, Health Net, Kaiser, and Secure Horizons.

    What if I want to continue with the current County Medical benefits after I retire. Is this possible?

      Yes, you may elect to continue with the County medical coverage through COBRA, However, it will be at cost to you and can only be continued for a limited time. Since dental and vision enrollment is mandatory, should you choose to continue with the County dental coverage, you will have duplicate coverage.

    Will I be able to get medical and dental insurance for my spouse, domestic partner or other dependant once Im retired?

      Yes, if you are a retired member who lives within the plans’ service areas and would like to have family medical coverage, you may purchase additional health insurance for dependents. This coverage is not supplemented in anyway by ACERA. You are responsible for payment of the health insurance premiums. This amount is deducted from your monthly retirement allowance.

    How do I enroll in a medical plan?

      Enrollment forms for health and dental/vision is included in your pre-retirement package. You may choose to decline or accept coverage at that time. If you decline coverage you cannot enroll or choose to enroll in a ACERA sponsored plan until Open Enrollment, which occurs once a year, usually during the month of November.
