Health, Vision and Dental Coverage ![]() Health, dental and vision coverage is available to all eligible retirees, their surviving spouses/beneficiaries, and/or former spouses who live within an ACERA sponsored plan area and who are receiving an ACERA retirement allowance. Medical care benefits in retirement are not a vested right. Coverage for medical care benefits may change because carriers eliminate or change plans or as a result of increasing health care costs. In general most of ACERA's health plan provider areas are within the state of California. If you live outside an ACERA sponsored area (i.e. out of state) your heath plan options are limited. Contact the health plan for provider phone listing with which you are enrolled to see if their coverage applies. ACERA's dental and vision plans provide nationwide coverage to ACERA members. ACERA's sponsored medical plans differ slightly from those offered as an active member. In general, if you elect to enroll in a health plan upon retirement, you will be enrolled in the same or equivalent plan at retirement. For a listing of ACERA's sponsored medical plans refer to the ACERA-sponsored Medical Plan section. Members who have Operating Engineers should contact ACERA for specific information and enrollment rules regarding that plan. Upon retirement, a member will receive enrollment papers for health dental and vision coverage. Enrollment in a health plan is voluntary and you may cancel your health plan coverage at any time. However, you may not re-enroll in an ACERA sponsored health plan until the next open enrollment period if you discontinue your health plan coverage. You may change health plan providers only during the ACERA Open Enrollment period. For more information regarding changing your plan provider, please see the Open Enrollment section. Participation in the dental and vision plan is mandatory and automatic, regardless of a member's years of service. Retiree premiums for the dental and vision plan are provided by ACERA and paid through contribution from the SRBR. Retirees may enroll eligible dependents for health, dental and vision coverage, with premiums for dependent costs deducted from their monthly retirement allowance. For eligibility rules regarding dependent enrollment please refer to the Dependent Eligibility section. Presently ACERA provides a retired member who has ten (10) or more years of service and is enrolled in an ACERA sponsored health plan a Monthly Medical Allowance (MMA) for the payment of their health insurance premium. The amount of the allowance is prorated according to a member's years of ACERA service credit. There is no contribution paid toward health plan premiums for a retiree with less than 10 years of service or for surviving spouses/beneficiaries and former spouses. Any applicable health plan premium costs are deducted from the retiree's monthly retirement allowance. See the Monthly Medical Allowance section for more information. Area Map:
