Board of Retirement

The Alameda County Board of Retirement is responsible for establishing policies governing the administration of the ACERA’s retirement plan, making benefit determinations, and managing the investment of the systems assets. The nine-member Board operates under authority granted by Article XVI of the Constitution of the State of California. Board members, with the exception of the County Treasurer, serve three (3) year terms.

 

Basic Board Responsibilities

  • Setting investment strategies and selecting investment advisors;

  • Selecting actuaries;

  • Selecting investment advisors and managers to invest the trusts assets in stocks, bonds, real estate and other high grade income producing investments and conducting reviews to assure safety and earnings;

  • Review and provide processes for disability retirements;

  • Selection of a General Manager, who is charged with, under Board direction, carrying out retirement law, Board policy and maintaining competent staff to handle day-to-day operations (member inquiries; processing of retirement applications and claims, etc.)

Regular monthly Board meetings are held every third Thursday of the month; however, the Board may meet in special sessions as circumstances warrant. Additionally, the Board has standing committees that meet once a month and ad hoc committees that meet on an as-needed basis. All meetings are normally held in the C.G. “Bud” Quist ACERA Board Room, 475 14th Street, 10th Floor, Oakland, CA 94612.
