David M. Safer is currently serving his fourth term on the Board of Retirement as the Retired Member representative, Eighth Seat, which expires December 31, 2010.  He served two prior consecutive terms from 1998 to 2003 as the past chair of the Board.

A long-time community volunteer, Mr. Safer is a board member of the Alameda County Retired Employees (ACRE) and the Retired Employees of Alameda County (REAC) organizations.  He has served on the board of the Cow Hollow Neighborhood Association, as well as been a member of various ad hoc neighborhood groups.  Mr. Safer demonstrates concern for his community by planting trees through Friends of the Urban Forest and by donating to Legal Assistance for Seniors and the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Foundation.

In 2004, Mr. Safer retired from 33 years of service as a deputy public defender with the Alameda County Office of the Public Defender.  He is originally from Wisconsin and received both his Bachelor of Science and Juris Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin.
